[It was a really close call, evacuating the courthouse in time before the explosion blew it to smithereens. Though it didn't go smoothly.
Blackquill's orders for everyone to calm down and evacuate calmly were all but ignored as the court attendees stampeded in terror of being caught in the explosion. People were getting knocked over left and right, so Blackquill and Fulbright had to step in to help.
The explosion rocked the courthouse while they were still inside, and Blackquill managed to get himself caught up in it. Along with getting scratched up from the flying debris, a large piece of rubble crashed into him.
And so this is where it all begins. Blackquill's currently on the ground, unresponsive. He's covered in small scratches, but the worst part is that boulder on top of his abdomen. That can't be good.]
[When he couldn't see Blackquill in the crowd, he assumed he'd gotten out and was safe and sound with everybody else.
An assumption that was quickly proved wrong when he saw the prosecutor's legs coming out from underneath a particularly large piece of rubble.]
Prosecutor Blackquill?! Help is on the way!
[By which he means him. He rushes over, pushing the smaller pieces of debris out of the way and attempts to wake the prosecutor up with several slaps to the face.]
[Well that wakes him up quickly. Blackquill's eyes shoot open, and as if by instinct, he moves to draw his sword for a counterattack.
There's two problems with that, though. For one, he doesn't even have his sword. And for two, he's partially covered by a boulder and can't actually move.
When that settles in, he gasps in pain and confusion.]
Wh-what--!
[His eyes dart around, taking in the situation as quickly as possible. His gaze moves from the boulder to Fulbright, who apparently is the person whose head would be rolling right now if Blackquill was able to strike back.]
Fool Bright! Remove this obstruction at once!
[He practically hisses it out because the boulder is restricting his breathing at the moment.]
[Which is apparently code for 'give me a minute, christ.'
But he still does his best to remove the boulder without hurting Blackquill more than necessary. But given that he's just one man, it's a little tougher than he thought.
Eventually the boulder is removed and Blackquill is freed.]
Ha ha ha! Justice has saved the day once again! In justice we trust!
[If you're expecting thanks for that Fulbright, you're sadly mistaken. Praise is hardly needed for something so basic.
Blackquill just remains silent as he attempts to get to his feet now that he's free. Unfortunately, as soon as he tries to sit up, a searing pain shoots from his chest. His vision goes black for a moment from the pain.]
Gah...!
[He grits his teeth as he slumps down onto his back again. That pain almost sends him back into unconsciousness, but he manages to hang on this time.
But still, if someone saves your life, c'mon son.]
Prosecutor Blackquill!
[He quickly rushes to the samurai's side, taking one of his arms and putting it around his shoulder so he can haul Simon to his feet, slowly, so as not to make his injuries even worse.]
Up you come! I shall get you to safety!
[When Simon is finally on his feet, Fulbright decides the best course of action is to carry him piggyback-style.]
[The pain rushes back as Blackquill is helped to his feet, but all he does is wince in reaction to it. Even though he's showing minor emotion on the outside, oh does it hurt like hell on the inside.
Taking deep breaths, he leans into Fulbright to keep himself upright. Ugh, this is so undignified but he can't stand on his own.
But then Fulbright decides to frickin' piggyback him. This completely takes him by surprise because the hell, he didn't give you permission to pick him up all the way up! Plus, the entire process hurts like hell.]
What on earth are you doing?
[He sounds absolutely pissed, which he also shows physically by wrapping his shackles tightly around Fulbright's throat. He's not going to choke or anything, but he's definitely sending warning signs that he's not okay with this.
This is utterly ridiculous and it must look utterly ridiculous to anyone lingering on the scene.]
[And that's all he'll say on that. If Fulbright's so dedicated, it's not like Blackquill's going to stop him.
He eventually lowers his shackles and just leans himself against Fulbright's back. The pain is tiring, and he can just scold Fulbright some more for this later. As they go along, he keeps breathing deeply, occasionally making quiet pained noises when a particular step agitates his injury.]
[Damn right you stop threatening to choke him, Simon.
Even though it's not exactly a huge courtroom, with his slow pace it seems like an hour when they're finally out and in the lobby. Simon is quickly deposited with the paramedics, and though he's needed on-site, he gets in the ambulance because a Champion of Justice does not leave helpless paramedics alone with a convicted murderer!!!]
Ha ha ha! Fear not! I, Bobby Fulbright, will ensure no harm comes to you at Simon Blackquill's hands!
[Fulbright do you really think he's going to be killing people in this condition?
It's bad enough that he has to deal with paramedics and hospitals now, but of course Fulbright's going to come with and ramble about rubbish like this.
He would make a comeback at that comment, but he's just too tired to care right now. So instead, he quietly stares up at the ceiling. He thinks things over as the paramedics tend to him, glaring and hissing at them when they touch a tender spot. It's a good thing they want to help and aren't that intimidated by him though. The convicted killer isn't very scary in a state like this.]
He rambles about justice to one of the paramedics who isn't tending to Simon, poor girl never knew what hit her. But he stays by Simon the entire time, he is fully invested in his continued good health, after all.
When they arrive at the hospital, Simon is handed off to several police officers.]
I'll be back to check on you as soon as I can Simon! In justice we trust!
[You know what, Blackquill would love to not be in this situation at all. That would be just great. He absolutely hates being in hospitals and being cared for. He's perfectly capable of nursing his wounds on his own, thanks. But of course, it's not that easy when you're a convicted murderer who's being watched 24/7.
When Fulbright makes his departure, Blackquill has been handcuffed to a mobile hospital bed surrounded by cops. If he could look any more annoyed, believe me he would.]
Please do take your time, detective. I won't have you bumbling up your work for my sake.
[In other words, he'd actually prefer if you just left him be kthx. But we both know that won't happen.]
I expect a full report on the bombing upon your return. I do not want to see your face until you have every last scrap of information within your grasp.
[And with that, they part ways.
When Fulbright comes back, he'll be directed to Blackquill's room. Two officers stand guard outside, and when Fulbright enters, he'll see at least one more in the room, keeping an eye on the convict.
And it must be pretty boring for that officer right now because Blackquill's fast asleep. It's a miracle what heavy painkillers will do for an insomniac like him. Uncharacteristically, he actually looks somewhat peaceful in his sleep, but small flinches appear on his face every now and then as he breaths in. He must've really messed up his ribs or something.]
[When Fulbright returns several hours later, he's clearly tired and near the point of collapsing. But he has a report to deliver!
He makes small talk with the guards as they unlock the door, flashing them a bright smile as he enters the room and gives the guard inside a break. He can handle Simon, regardless of if he's sleeping or not.
But since he is, it would not do to wake him up, so he settles into the nearby chair to wait, and maybe sleep himself.]
[As if Blackquill has Fool Bright senses, he awakens not long after Fulbright takes over. His eyes flicker open, and he takes note of the status of the room, namely one Fool Bright suddenly being present.
And while Fulbright had the decency to let him keep sleeping, he's not going to return it if Fulbright is sleeping now.]
Fool Bright. [His voice is somewhat strained, but stern, as though he won't accept Fulbright sleeping through what he's saying.] I trust you have what I asked for?
[What are greetings? Blackquill only cares about business.]
[He jumps awake with a start, having dozed off soon after he sat down.
Lifting up his sunglasses, he rubs at his eyes to clear them and looks blearily at Blackquill. But he doesn't say anything, just rummages through his jacket and presents the report Simon asked for.
[Wow, that's surprising. Fulbright usually isn't one to jump when addressed. Blackquill makes note of his partner's condition as he flips through the report. Trial against Starbuck postponed, new trial for the bombing coming soon, state of the courthouse, etc. etc. His stern look slowly turns into a small smirk as he finishes reading it.]
Well done, Fool Bright. [He coughs briefly. Augh, his chest is still killing him and it's difficult to stay sitting up like this. He holds a hand to his chest as he takes a few shaky breaths. But he continues on as if there were no interruptions.] I am honestly impressed with the quality of your work this time around. I always knew that the "bright" in your name was not simply an unfortunate form of irony.
[Don't act like he's going to keep up the compliments for long or anything. Just laying on a little Simon Says. He's going to keep trying, okay.]
